Optometrist vs. Ophthalmologist
Which one to see.
- Optometrists (OD) perform eye exams, prescribe glasses and contacts, and diagnose and treat many eye conditions. Oklahoma is one of a small number of states that allow optometrists to perform certain laser procedures.
- Ophthalmologists (MD/DO) are physicians who perform eye surgery and manage complex disease.
- Opticians fit and dispense glasses.
For routine care, start with an optometrist; you'll be referred if you need surgery or specialty care.
